World Poker Series Main Event Final Table Profile: Cliff Josephi

Up until 13 years ago, the only thing Cliff Josephy had to do with poker was a “donkey” who confessed to himself in a poker game on Thursday night.

“Yeah, that was me,” he remembers with a smile. “I was literally handing out the money every week. I think they would have taken the money for Limo to pick me up if I wanted them to. It was very bad.”

But that all changed on Dec. 25, 2003, when he boarded a JetBlue plane bound for Florida with his family. “I thought to myself, ‘Wow, this is kind of cool,'” Josephy recalled. “I wasn’t really used to No-limits. At our house games, we played all kinds of crazy games all the time. I remember saying to myself, ‘I can do it.'”

Throughout his life, he was not alone in stockbrokers. Millions of amateur poker players from all walks of life were thinking the same thing, which led to an explosion in online poker and a sharp increase in WSOP participants.

But Josephi was different. He said that already armed himself intuitively with three characteristics: math, instinct, and concentration, he was critical to his tremendous success. He read every book he could get his hands on. He talked to people who knew more than he did and, more importantly, he listened carefully. He recorded hours of time he was online. He moved from fish to shark in a relatively short time, and he was fully enjoying his new hobby.

“Hey, if it’s much more fun than losing, you win,” he said. “It’s a fact that everyone knows.”

About a year after he started playing poker, his company was going through a transition due to bankruptcy. Josephy went to his wife and told her that he wanted to make poker his full-time performance. She backed the decision, and it wasn’t long before the nickname “Johnny Bax” became an online poker legend as he dominated expensive games.
