Citing unnamed sources, ESPN reported Tuesday (Korea time) that Tatum has renewed his contract with the Boston Red Sox on the condition that he receive 314 million U.S. dollars for five years. The contract also reportedly includes a clause that allows a player to choose a team one year later and a monetary reward for transferring to another team.

According to the Associated Press, Tatum’s contract is the NBA’s highest ever, exceeding $304 million for five years signed by teammate Jaylon Brown ahead of the 2023-2024 season.

Tatum averaged 22.2 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 7.2 assists in the 2023-2024 championship game. With Tatum’s performance, Boston defeated the Dallas Mavericks to claim its 18th career championship. Tatum, who joined Boston through a rookie draft in 2017, is a five-time NBA All-Star. He represented the U.S. basketball team at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in 2021, won a gold medal, and will also participate in the 2024 Paris Olympics, which will open this month.

Tatum’s contract came right after Wick Grossbeck’s ownership group announced its plan to sell all of its shares by 2028. The Associated Press predicted that Boston’s total salary and wealth tax would exceed 400 million U.S. dollars unless the players change.
