Mayor Nutter signed two bills to re-designate Center City as a commercial entertainment district in November. The new zoning zone includes a gallery in Market East, a shopping center that will accommodate a proposed casino development plan by Foxwoods. The next step is for the casino company to get approval from the city planning board and the game control board for the development plan.
Foxwoods has already had to choose an alternative site from the original planned site in South Philadelphia, located on Columbus Boulevard, due to strong opposition to the plan.
