Paetongtarn Chinawatra was officially approved as Thailand’s new prime minister by King Maha Vajiralongkorn on Sunday after being voted on by the country’s parliament on Friday.

At the age of 37, Shinawatra will be the country’s youngest prime minister. She is the daughter of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and the niece of Yinglak Shinawatra, the country’s first female prime minister.
The new prime minister was elected just two days after Thailand’s Constitutional Court dismissed his former prime minister, Sretta Tabithin, for appointing a former lawyer to the cabinet who had served his sentence.
Mr. Sretta, a real estate entrepreneur representing Phutai Tang, was one of the most powerful officials in support of Thailand’s push to legalize its casino resort business.
In Friday’s vote, Mr Shinawatra secured 319 votes in the House of Commons after being the sole candidate to replace Mr Sretta by the Peutai party.
At a news conference, Shinawatra said she would continue with all her predecessor’s policies, including “major” economic stimulus and reforms. She added details of the government’s policies will be presented to parliament in September.
Her billionaire father, Shinawatra, was one of Thailand’s most influential politicians. He was ousted as prime minister in a 2006 military coup. Inlak Shinawatra’s sister, Shinawatra, was removed from her position by the Constitutional Court in 2014.
A draft casino legalization bill, known as the Amusement Park Bill, is undergoing a public consultation process that was scheduled to be finalized yesterday (August 18).
According to the draft bill, Thailand’s prime minister, deputy prime minister and five ministers will form a so-called “policy committee” to lead the country’s casino policy efforts.
The scope of the authority of the High Public Service Commission includes setting the number of permits and operating areas for casino entertainment complexes, as well as recommending tax rates for casino operators.
