The size of the contract is significant. Oklahoma City awarded a huge three-year contract worth about $87 million to catch Hartenstein. Oklahoma City, which desperately needed the supply and demand of big man resources, has completely made up for what it needed with this contract.

Hartenstein was drafted by Houston with the 13th pick in the second round in the 2017 draft. After two seasons in Houston, he has not easily settled in Denver, Cleveland, and the Clippers.

Hartenstein, however, has begun to show potential in earnest in New York. Notably, he averaged 25.3 minutes in 75 games last season, receiving the most opportunities since his debut. He averaged 7.8 points and 8.3 rebounds. Hartenstein also played as the starting player in all playoff stages, posting 8.5 points and 7.8 rebounds on average.

New York is also known to have made the best offer to catch Hartenstein. However, it differed significantly from Oklahoma City’s offer. New York proposed a four-year, $72 million contract, the maximum they were able to do, but ultimately missed Hartenstein.
